Intuitive Therapeutics reorients its activity.

IntuitivePlan, the inverse planning software developed by Intuitive Therapeutics is CE marked for its use with Leksell Gamma Knife® since June 2019. Based on a unique full convex optimization algorithm, IntuitivePlan brings full satisfaction to its users in Lausanne, Switzerland and in Bochum, Germany. In addition, it has been evaluated in comparative studies by Prof. Jean Regis (CHU La Timone, Marseille, France) and Dr. Ian Paddick (Queen Square Radiosurgery Center, London, UK), which have demonstrated its high level of performance for inverse planning in neuroradiosurgery.

Unfortunately, despite the quality and performance of this unique inverse planning approach, it has not been possible to establish a collaboration with Elekta for the integration of IntuitivePlan into the Leksell Gamma Knife® platform, or to secure a collaboration for the use of IntuitivePlan in conjunction with their system.

Intuitive Therapeutics has therefore decided that it will stop the distribution of IntuitvePlan in January 2021, and to put the patents protecting the use of its full convex optimization algorithm for inverse planning in radiation therapy on the market. The algorithm developed by Intuitive Therapeutics is likely to be extended for applications to all radiotherapy and radiosurgery equipments, as proven in various R&D work performed with this algorithm.    

Intuitive Therapeutics will henceforth reorient itself towards the development of innovative concepts in Artificial Intelligence and several projects in the field of medical imaging are in an advanced research and development phase.

IntuitivePlan: when quality meets efficiency

The history of IntuitivePlan

In collaboration with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne, the School of Engineering and Architecture of Fribourg, the CSEM of Neuchâtel and the University Hospital of Lausanne, Intuitive Therapeutics has developed since 2014 a novel algorithm capable of a revolutionary method of planning radiotherapy and radiosurgery treatments with extreme speed and unequalled ease of use. 

Patent applications were filed in Switzerland, the USA, Europe, China, Japan, India, South Korea, Brazil and Hong-Kong. Two patents were delivered in the USA and in Switzerland in 2017.

In 2015, we produced the first real-time demonstrator for linear accelerators using IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy) and the first proof of concept for linear accelerators using VMAT (Volumetric-Modulated Arc Therapy). The use of the demonstrator allowed us to show the superior capacity of the solutions proposed by our algorithm. 

In 2016, the first proof of concept for radiosurgery was achieved with the Leksell Gamma Knife® (Elekta AB, Sweden). As for IMRT and VMAT, our algorithm clearly brought more effective solutions in terms of quality and treatment time. 

In 2016, we also achieved the proof of concept for the CyberKnife® (Accuray Incorporated, USA) demonstrating the capability to use our algorithm for this machine. 

The Leksell Gamma Knife® is currently used as the reference platform for our developments.

Since May 2017, the company has based itself in St-Sulpice - Switzerland. It benefits from the support of the Service for economic promotion and innovation (SPEI - Service de la Promotion de l'Economie et de l'Innovation) of the Canton de Vaud.

Since June 2019, Intuitive Therapeutics is certified as compliant with ISO 13485:2016 and IntuitivePlan v1.0 is available for clinical use in Europe.
